Tamil Nadu Boosts EV Adoption and Social Security for Gig Workers with ₹20,000 Subsidy & Insurance Scheme
In a landmark move blending environmental responsibility with worker welfare, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a ₹20,000 subsidy for electric scooter purchases—exclusively for 2,000 registered gig workers under the Tamil Nadu Platform-Based Gig Workers’ Welfare Board. With a ₹4 crore total allocation, the initiative aims to accelerate the shift toward clean, cost-effective mobility for those working in high-mileage delivery and service sectors.
Complementing this green push, the government is introducing a comprehensive group insurance scheme covering 50,000 gig workers. The policy provides ₹5 lakh for accidental death or total disability, ₹2.5 lakh for partial disability, and ₹1.25 lakh for other permanent disabilities—all for a minimal annual premium of ₹105 per worker.
By simultaneously reducing the financial barrier to EV adoption and ensuring strong social security, Tamil Nadu is setting a precedent for sustainable and inclusive policy-making. The program not only supports the livelihoods of gig workers—often exposed to occupational risks—but also encourages the transition to cleaner transportation, aligning with India’s long-term climate goals.
This dual-focus strategy—green mobility and worker protection—could well become a model blueprint for other Indian states seeking to balance economic equity with environmental sustainability.
