Montra Electric’s Rhino EV Trucks Cross 1.2 Crore km in Just 2 Years

Montra Electric, part of the Murugappa Group, has achieved a significant milestone with its flagship Rhino 5538EV, a 55-ton GCW (Gross Combination Weight) electric truck. Within just two years of launch, the Rhino fleet has collectively covered an impressive 1.2 crore kilometers, proving its reliability in some of India’s most demanding logistics applications.

Currently, a fleet of 350 Rhino EV trucks is operational across the country, serving critical industries such as steel, cement, and port logistics. By shifting heavy-duty cargo movement to electric power, these trucks have already helped reduce over 3.79 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions, reinforcing the role of electric mobility in decarbonizing long-haul freight.

Performance and Technology

At the heart of the Rhino lies advanced electrification technology designed for heavy commercial duty:

  • Battery: 282 kWh LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack
  • Motor: PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor)
  • Power Output: 280 kW (≈380 hp)
  • Torque: 2000 Nm, ensuring strong pulling power for heavy cargo
  • Fast Charging: Supports up to 240 kW DC fast charging, enabling 20–100% charge in just 60 minutes
  • Certified Range: 169 km under standard test conditions

These specifications make Rhino one of the most advanced electric trucks in India’s emerging zero-emission commercial vehicle space.

Expanding the Rhino Range

Montra Electric has confirmed that the Rhino EV lineup will not be limited to the current 6×4 tractor-trailer. The company plans to introduce additional configurations, including:

  • 4×2 Tractor-Trailer
  • 6×4 Tipper Variant

This expansion will allow Montra to tap into a wider segment of India’s heavy-duty logistics and construction markets, where the demand for sustainable, high-performance vehicles is rapidly growing.

Industry Impact

Heavy trucks account for a significant share of India’s freight-related emissions. By electrifying this segment, Montra Electric is contributing not only to sustainability goals but also to cost efficiency for operators, thanks to reduced fuel dependency and lower maintenance costs.

Speaking on the achievement, Jalaj Hariiom Gupta emphasized that the Rhino EV is designed to meet India’s unique operating conditions, offering both reliability and efficiency in intensive industrial logistics operations.

Outlook

As the Indian EV ecosystem continues to evolve with better charging infrastructure and policy support, the success of Montra’s Rhino series highlights the viability of electric trucks in commercial fleets. With the upcoming 4×2 and tipper variants, Montra Electric is poised to strengthen its presence in the green freight revolution, aligning with India’s mission of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
